Under the direction of the Director of Nursing for Children’s Services, and Sr. Director of Nursing, and the School Principal(s), and operating within personal license constraints in strict accordance with approved American Nurses Association Standards of School Nursing Practices, N.J. Department of Education Administrative Code and Amendments, and established Bancroft policies and procedures, provides various health services to screen, identify, assess, and address students’ healthcare needs:
In addition to performing all of the duties as defined for the School Nurse:
1a) Provides health counseling and education for students, family members/guardians, and staff members;
2)Performs the following responsibilities as defined within the N.J. Department of Education Administrative Code and Amendments:
3)Provides ongoing guidance, support and acts as a lead for the other Registered Nurses in Education:
4) Maintains ongoing awareness of current and changing nursing statutes and regulations, state/county/local School District health laws and regulations governing public schools, current and developing health programs and services, etc., by performing independent research, attending learning workshops, reading journals, attending in-service workshops, etc. Strives to enhance own professional growth and incorporate findings into practice with the objective of strengthening and facilitating the educational process for all students.
5.Interacts on a regular basis and effectively communicates with students, family members, School Principal(s) and faculty members, discipline-specific clinical staff, primary physicians, healthcare providers, direct care givers, Nursing Department management and nursing staff, Sr. VP and Medical Director, and school district representatives, state and federal regulatory agencies, Social Workers, etc. to attain and maintain optimal health and health attitudes and assisting in the removal or modification of health-related barriers to the learning process.
6.Facilitates a team approach to Schools’ health services program development, implementation, and monitoring by effectively collaborating with all specialty/clinical disciplines, parents/guardians, School Districts, etc., to identify and best meet the individual health and learning needs of each student.
7.Builds and maintains effective relationships with students and their family members/guardians to promote a sense of trust and confidence with the role of Nursing within Education.
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, a certificate issued by the N.J. Department of Education, State Board of Examiners and a current and valid N.J. license are required. A minimum of one year of general nursing experience preferred working with the developmentally disabled and/or the traumatically brain injured.
Special Skills:
Knowledge of nursing/clinical operations and procedures required, as well as a knowledge of primary care principles and practices. Ability to observe, assess, and record individual medical symptoms, reactions, and progress required. Knowledge of emergency medical procedures, of drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration required. Effective communication, interpersonal skills, management, and organization skills required. Knowledge of current principles, methods, and procedures for the delivery of medical assessment and treatment required. Valid driver’s license required in incumbent’s legal name and current address with no provisional restrictions. Minimum 18 years of age required.
