FLSA Status: ​Non-exempt

 

Physical therapist assistant (PTA)​ works as part of a team to provide physical therapy services under the direction and supervision of the licensed physical therapist. PTA implements selected components of persons served interventions (treatment), obtain data related to the interventions provided, and make modifications in selected interventions either to progress persons served as directed by the physical therapist or to ensure persons served safety and comfort to enhance the individual potential for learning and to meet the specific rehabilitation needs of persons served.

 

 

 

Responsibilities

1. Under clinical supervision of a Licensed Physical Therapist, provides physical therapy treatments in accordance with regulations, standards, and guidelines defined by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Code of Ethical Practice, N.J. Physical Therapy Practice Act, Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD), the Individual Program Plan (IPP), Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA), and established Bancroft policies and procedures.
● Effectively utilizes available information regarding therapy and treatment for each person served. ● Provides assistance in the development of physical therapy and treatment-specific goals and objectives;
● Assists program management in the design of functional strategies and the need for adaptive equipment that enhances learning and create an environment best suited to individual profile and needs.
● Provides individual, group, and integrated direct treatment, therapy, and/or special rehabilitation skills to persons served;
● Prompts and/or assists each person in the achievement of goals while actively encouraging the independence and competency of each person within his/her ability limit;
● Plans and schedules frequency and duration of sessions in accordance with individual needs; ● Provides suggestions regarding the utilization of techniques and/or materials to support and enhance functional abilities.
● Recommends appropriate adaptive equipment to facilitate optimal functioning

 

2. Facilitates a team approach to program development, implementation, and monitoring by effectively collaborating with all specialty/clinical disciplines, parents/guardians, residential and day program staff, etc., to identify and best meet the individual rehabilitation needs of each person served.
3. Actively participates in team/departmental meetings, etc., and serves as a member of the TransDisciplinary Team (TDT) process in conjunction with the Individual Rehabilitation Plan (IRP). Communicates results of treatment plans to persons served, family members, residential and day program staff, external case managers, etc.
4. Provides crisis intervention, as needed, through de-escalation techniques, staff support, and assistance. Follows state-approved emergency procedures and utilizes Bancroft-approved crisis intervention techniques at all times.
5. Ensures the site operates in accordance with the organization’s quality standards for safety, security, and cleanliness, as well as applicable state licensing and accreditation standards. 5. May work with physical therapy assistant students throughout course of assignment of treatment of persons served. Provides daily advice and guidance to students and strives to increase students’ knowledge of discipline-specific methods and techniques.
6. Maintains an awareness of current and changing trends, techniques, methods, and research in the field of physical therapy and treatments by attending learning workshops and professional seminars, reading journals, attending in-service workshops, external conferences in area of specialty/clinical discipline, etc.
7. Serves as a role model to persons served by projecting a positive self-image of professionalism, appearance, confidentiality, courtesy, conduct, honesty, fairness, personal integrity, and a respect for the fundamental rights, dignity, and privacy of others.
8. Performs other direct service, consultative, and supportive duties specific to physical therapy and treatment services as assigned or as necessary. Remains flexible and adaptable in work schedules and work assignments as defined by rehabilitation needs.

Qualifications

PTA must be a graduate from a CAPTE-accredited PTA program, and a current N.J. State Physical Therapist Assistant license is required. Minimum of one year of work experience as a physical therapy assistant working with individuals with traumatic and acquired brain injury and other neurological diagnoses preferred.
Knowledge of anatomy and physiology required with the ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress. Ability to effectively communicate medical information, test results, or proposed treatment in a manner easily understood required. Knowledge of the administration, indications and contraindications of various physical agents and physical therapy techniques and the ability to instruct individuals in the proper use of facilities and equipment required. Skill in performing a range of manual physical therapy techniques and knowledge of the operation and maintenance of related therapy facilities and equipment required.
