We are seeking a Full Time Speech Therapist to join our dynamic team! Our Speech Therapist provides direct, consultative, and supportive diagnostic and therapeutic services for communication and oral motor disorders to students, faculty, and staff members to enhance the students’ potential for learning and assist students in the acquisition of functional performance skills needed to access, participate in, and benefit from, the educational environment.

Responsibilities

1. Provides direct and consultative service, treatment, and intervention for communication and oral motor disorders of students in accordance with regulations, standards, and guidelines defined by the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD), American Speech/Language and Hearing Association (ASHA), Code of Ethical Practice, Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA), the students’ Individual Program Plan (IPP) and Individual Education Plan (IEP), N.J. Department of Education (DOE), the student’s approved behavior plan, and established Bancroft policies and procedures.

 

2. Conducts diagnostic assessments of the need for communication and oral motor skills for individual students, as needed or as assigned, to provide a comprehensive student profile:

 

o On an ongoing basis, determines the need for therapeutic intervention, level of intellectual functioning, communication and oral motor abilities, and achievement performance;

 

o Working in tandem with external Audiologist, reviews records of students and interprets the results of audiological testing to determine and follow-up on specific therapy, treatment, and intervention required for individual students. Provides recommendations for service delivery;

 

o Provides reassessment of students, focusing on targeted areas of need at established intervals;

 

o Assists in the planning and development of goals specific to communication and oral motor therapy and treatment services that are educationally relevant, achievable, measurable, and can be effectively utilized in each individual’s educational program.

 

3. Provides direct and consultative treatment services for communication and oral motor disorders to students, family members, direct care givers, education faculty, and staff members within the education environment:

 

o Effectively utilizes available information regarding therapy, treatment, and developmental information for each student. Provides assistance in the development of individual educational goals and objectives specific to communication and oral motor disorders;

 

o Assists faculty in the design of classroom strategies that enhance learning and create an environment best suited to students’ profiles and needs. May conduct or assist in instruction within the classroom setting. Provides individual, group, and integrated direct treatment, therapy, and/or special skill development/enhancement to students;

 

o Prompts and/or assists each person in the achievement of goals while actively encouraging the independence and competency of each person within his/her ability limit;

 

o Plans and schedules frequency and duration of sessions in accordance with individual needs and School District mandates;

 

o Provides suggestions regarding the utilization of techniques and/or materials to support and enhance learning abilities. Recommends appropriate assistive and augmentative equipment to facilitate optimal functioning within the classroom environment, provides recommendations regarding classroom positioning, identifies barriers in an effort to minimize the impact on a student’s access to educational programs, and recommends environmental accommodations to both support classroom functioning and facilitate the carryover of therapeutic goals;

 

o Demonstrates and instructs students and staff in the proper use of functional and assistive equipment, devices, strategies and techniques specific to addressing communication and oral motor disorders; e.g., alternative/augmentative communication systems, sign language, manual language boards, picture boards, computerized equipment, feeding equipment, etc.;

 

o Utilizes a system of documentation that is professional, efficient, accountable, and conforms to federal, state and School policies and procedures; develops and maintains progress reports, session notes, treatment summary reports, etc., as mandated by the IPP;

 

o Provides training on a variety of topics and specific to communication and oral motor disorders to faculty and staff members regarding the implementation and monitoring of treatment plans, etc.;

 

o Communicates and consults with faculty, staff, family members, medical/healthcare providers, specialists, and agencies working with students regarding communication and oral motor disorders therapy and treatment-specific needs and progress. Provides therapy and treatment-specific strategies to facilitate positive parent/child interactions in the home and the carryover of treatment plans.

 

4. Facilitates a team approach to program development, implementation, and monitoring by effectively collaborating with all specialty/clinical disciplines, parents/guardians, school districts, etc., to identify and best meet the individual learning needs of each student.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:
Masters degree in Speech Language Pathology to include a National Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC) from
the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association (ASHA) preferred. N.J. State Certification as Speech

Language Therapist required.

 

Special Skills:
Ability to assess and treat speech, language, and hearing disorders required. Knowledge of relevant diagnostic tests
and procedures, the nature of speech language and/or auditory impairments, and speech articulation and language
skills therapy techniques required. Ability to effectively communicate medical information, test results, diagnoses
and/or proposed treatment. Effective consultation and treatment skills required.

 

Effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills required with a strong desire to work with
neurologically-challenged individuals. Ability to work independently and as an integral part of a team required.
Ability to implement crisis intervention techniques required. Attainment of CPR, First Aid, and Crisis Prevention and
Intervention certification within first 90 days of employment required. Valid driver’s license required in incumbent’s
legal name and current address with no provisional restrictions. Minimum 18 years of age required.

 

An incumbent in this position who has graduated from an accredited college with a BA in Occupational Therapy,
Physical Therapy, Speech/Language Pathology, Social Work, Recreation, Art, Dance, Music, Physical Education,
Nutrition, Sociology, Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, or Psychology AND possesses at least one year
of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities or brain injuries OR four years of experience as
a Habilitation Plan Coordinator or Senior Community
